GCHB CH Tradewind’s Caicos

“Caicos”

We’ve brought in a new boy.

Our friend, Jeffie Casey, moved to Florida. After her move she continued showing bassets and bred a litter that was whelped in November of 2012. The sire and dam are from two excellent European breeders. I approached Jeffie for information on one of her boys from her litter for possible use as a stud for Miss Sassy. She contacted me about the possibility of Caicos from the litter for the Woebgon Pack. Over the following weeks we received numerous photos and movies of Caicos. Hours were spent by both of us examining the video clips. I even slowed them down to see his movement in stop action frame by frame. We were thrilled with what we saw. After many email exchanges and phone calls, arrangements were made for Caicos to come to live with us. Caicos passed his vet check and arrived with Jeffie on August 20, 2013. He made his West Coast debut at the Santa Barbara Kennel Club Shows. Caicos had already earned two points toward his Championship at a show in Florida before he came. He finished his AKC Championship with a third major on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the Western Hound Association of Southern California’s Hound Classic. In May of 2015 Cacos completed the requirements for his AKC Grand Championship At the 2017 Saturday Kennel Club of Beverly Hills Show Caicos was selected NOHS Reserve Best in Show. Since many of you know that we name our boys after beers you needn't worry. There was a Caicos Brewery that sold Caicos Beer.

The litter announcement for the litter that Caicos is from. The sire and dam are both from Europe.

On Saturday, July 20th Tradewind’s Caicos was Winners Dog at a show in Florida for two points at seven months. He was shown to the win by Ellen Ferguson, a longtime basset hound breeder. We had already made arrangements with Ellen and the breeder of Caicos, Jeffie Casey, for us to bring him out to California as a member of the Woebgon Bassets Pack.

Caicos arrived in Southern California on August 20, 2013. He quickly fit in very well with the Woebgon Pack.

Caicos and Don at their first show in Santa Barbara.

The picture was taken from a video clip so it’s a little blurry.

Some pictures taken out in our front yard. Some were taken just after he came and others were taken at a fun match early in October between shows. The dog shows have been very far apart and the dogs needed some practice as did the handlers.

Caicos getting a bath before a show. He loves all the attention.

Over the years at least one of the shows put on by the Kennel Club of Riverside has been good for Woebgon Bassets. The 2013 weekend was no different. While Saturday was a bust Sunday proved to be a different story. It was a great day at the dog show. All three of our entries came home with a win. Judge Mrs. Debra Thompson was very complementary of all three of our bassets.

Judge - Ms. Rosemary N. Green from Australia

Ever since we finished our first Champion, Buddy, at the Palm Springs Kennel Club show this weekend in Indio has been good for Woebgon Bassets. In 2014 the weekend good for us as well. While Saturday was a total bust for us Friday and Sunday were great. On Friday Heidi was Select Bitch, but Caicos didn’t win. He made up for that on Sunday by winning Winner’s Dog and Best of Winners for a 3 point major under Judge Ms. Rosemary N. Green from Australia. That day Heidi finished her Grand Championship with a Best of Opposite Sex win for her seventh major and seventh show winning over other Champions.

Tradewind’s Caicos was Winners Dog for 2 points at the San Fernando Kennel Club Show on January 18 in Ventura, California under Judge Michael A. Brophy. That gave him 9 of the 15 points he needs for his Championship.

Tradewind’s Caicos

At the Orange Empire Dog Club Show Caicos was Winners Dog and Best of Winners on 1/27/14 under Judge Dr. E. Carolyn Hensley. Dr, Hensley made it clear at the beginning of judging that she was looking for bassets that could go out and hunt for rabbits.

We at Woebgon Bassets are very honored to win under judges who make it clear that they are looking for basset hounds “fit for purpose” that they could envision out in the field hinting for rabbits. Over the years we seem to have done very well under judges like Dr. Hensley.

Second 3 Point Major

Breeder/judge Henrietta Surjan, Secretary of the MEOE Basset Hound Club from Hungary. Ms. Surjan has owned basset hounds since 1994 when she fell in love with the breed after seeing some basset hounds at a show. She started breeding in 1998 and was greatly influenced by dogs she saw on a trip to the Czech Republic. Ms. Surjan has owned and bred many Champions. Her kennel name is Riverside Bassets.

With this win Caicos now had both his majors. The win left him just one point short of the number required for his AKC Championship. We hoped to finish his Championship soon.

AKC Grand Champion

GCh. Ch. Tradewind’s Caicos

Caicos is still being shown in Best of Breed competition. We've stopped having win photos taken unless he picks up another Best of Breed,  or higher win because of the cost of pictures. We may have photos taken for NOHS Best of Breed in the future. Don is enjoying showing him. The pair are having a lot of fun together in the show ring.

After completing his AKC Championship Caicos won many times as Best of Opposite Sex to Best in Breed and as Select Dog to gain points for his Grand Championship. Sorry, we didn't have any pictures taken of these wins.

March 4, 2017

At the Kennel Club of Palm Springs Show Caicos was was Best of Breed National Owner Handled Series Hound (NOHS) won the NOHS Group  Hound Group 4 under judge Ms. Sheila D. Paske. This was a very exciting way to start off the new year.

As we were talking to Ms. Paske after judging while waiting for a photographer to take the picture we found out that she truly loved Caicos. She said that she loved everything about him. Unknown to us or her at the time was that she had seen Caicos' brother, Cayman, sitting by the show ring in Florida at the AKC/Eukanuba Championship Show in December and told his owner/breeders, Jeffie and Steve Casey, how much she loved him as well.

At the Cabrillo Kennel Club Show Caicos was Best of Breed National Owner Handled Series Hound (NOHS) won the NOHS Group 4.

As we were talking to the judge she mentioned that she was trained in basset hounds by a longtime basset hound breeder and our friend, Cathy Spencer.

At the Kennel Club of Beverly Hills Show Caicos won the National Owner Handled Series (NOHS) Hound Group 1 under judge Mr. Thomas Powers. This was a very exciting way to start off the year. Mr. Powers is the president of the Kennel Club of Beverly Hills. He breeds and exhibits Irish Wolfhounds with his wife and has also exhibited and finished a number of Dachshunds, Beagles, Mastiffs and Harriers.

Note: This photo was taken the day of the show.

At the Kennel Club of Beverly Show Caicos won the National Owner Handled Series (NOHS) Reserve Best in Show under judge Mr. Thomas Powers. This win was a first for us and for me as an exhibitor. Mr. Powers truly loved Caicos and it was very exciting to be so recognized by such an experienced hound breeder. Our thanks to Steve and Jeffie Casey for allowing us to have such a wonderful boy.

Note: Because of the judge's commitment to the TV portion of the show we were unable to take this photo the day of the show. It was done the next day.

Since the same judge judged the NOHS Group and Best in Show we decided to take this photo as well.

Our friend, Walt Ross, took this picture of the three of us over where they did the TV produced show the day that Caicos won. No, the NOHS winners were not part of the TV show.

For those who aren't familiar with dog shows Best of Breed is given to the dog that the judge feels is the best example shown to them at the show. Best of Breed in National Owner Handled Series (NOHS) is awarded to the dog that the judge feels is the best example of the dogs shown that are exhibited by their owner who in not a professional handler or a member of a professional handler's family. By creating the NOHS the AKC established a competition where owners who are not connected to showing their dogs professionally can compete. It was AKC's way of giving owner handlers a way to be recognized for their work. According to the AKC's own figures approximately 80% of the dogs shown at shows are shown by owner handlers, but prior to the creation of the NOHS they always had to compete with professionals. The NOHS even includes a system where dogs can be ranked nationally Unfortunately most dog shows in Southern California do not offer competition for NOHS

For those who aren't familiar with dog shows Best in Show is as good as it gets. There is nothing higher. Reserve Best in Show is like second place. While this wasn't a win for the whole show it was one where Caicos was judged against all the dogs that were shown by their owners who are not professional handlers. This National Owner-Handled Series (NOHS) is a fairly new competition at AKC shows. It provides those of us who are not professionals and show dogs we own on a more level "playing field" in the shows that offer this award. Unfortunately very few of our shows in Southern California offer NOHS competition. In a way that makes this win even more special. It looks like Caicos was ranked around 4th nationally in the NOHS after this win.

Since completing the requirements for his Grand Championship  Caicos has won many times as NOHS Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex to Best in Breed and as Select Dog. Sorry, we didn't have any pictures taken of these wins. Taking professional pictures become very expensive.

At the May 20th GSDBHC Specialty Show Caicos was Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed and Best of Breed for the AKC National Owner Handled Series. When Caicos was a puppy the judge, Dr. Carolyn Hensley, gave Caicos a two point win by awarding him Winners Dog and Best of Winners. At that time she said she was looking for a basset that she thought could perform all day in the field hunting rabbits. She still felt that way about him at the age of four.

Caicos finished the year at Number 10 nationally

in the

AKC's National Owner Handled Series

For those who are not familiar with the American Kennel Club's NOHS here is a quote from the AKC: "To celebrate the dedication and enthusiasm of owner-handler exhibitors the American Kennel Club has created the new AKC National Owner-Handled Series. This non-titling competition will be held at select dog shows across the country. The end of year competition for the AKC National Owner-Handled Series will be held in conjunction with the AKC show in December. Dogs that finished ranked in the top ten (plus ties) for their breed during the qualifying period will be invited to compete in the competition. Dogs exhibited by professional handlers on the day of the event are not eligible for this competition."

Pam and Don would like to thank Steve & Jeffie Casey, Caicos' breeders, for allowing them to have such a wonderful boy. Thanks as well to all their friends for all their encouragement and support.

Caicos completed the requirements for his Bronze Grand Championship by being chosen as Select Dog at the Long Beach Kennel Club Show on January 13, 2019 under Judge Ms. Marjorie Martorella. This was a four point major and his 16th major for this title. Caicos defeated other AKC Champions in 36 shows under 35 different judges. We’d like to thank all the judges for recognizing his qualities. Caicos was bred by Steve and Jeffie Casey. They have been right with us by offering their encouragement and support. Caicos is owned by Don & Pam Bullock and owner handled for this win by Don.
